I’m thankful to have been born in this great country. Thank you Lord for the freedom to worship You, and the liberty to go to church when I desire.  Presently, there are no padlocks on the church door to keep me from entering; or fear of being imprisoned when I attend. Our pastors have the privilege to preach the glad tidings that Jesus Saves! The Good News can flow freely from pulpits across America, by radio, television, internet , or by other means. Thank you Heavenly Father, Son, and Precious Holy Spirit for this privilege. Thank you Lord for all who have paid the ultimate price, starting with the Founding Fathers, and all who have given their lives throughout our history as a nation until this present time.

The Declaration of Independence states: “And for support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on Divine Providence we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

No other family has had a longer legacy of celebrating the Fourth of July than the Adams family. From 1776 to 1892, the Adams family had been involved in a myriad of Independence Day activities. John Adams (1735-1826) was instrumental in negotiating in favor of independence at the Continental Congresses (1774-78)  signed the Declaration of Independence.

John Adams’ famous letter of July 3, 1776, in which he wrote to his wife Abigail what his thoughts were about celebrating the fourth of July . Following is the exact text from his letter with his original spellings:

The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival.

It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.

It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States.

Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.

(The Book of Abigail and John: Selected Letters of the Adams Family, 1762-1784, Harvard University Press, 1975, 142).

God’s people are longing for an awakening,  and for Jesus and His righteousness to rule in our country. They, see the foundation being destroyed and wonder what they can do about it.   David lamented this in Psalm 11:3 when he cried, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

God’s word shares:

Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.  Proverbs 14:34

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
