America The Beautiful

Lyrics by Katharine Lee Bates – 1913

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

French writer Alexis de Tocqueville, after visiting America in 1831, said, “I sought for the

greatness of the United States in her commodious harbors, her ample rivers, her fertile fields,

and boundless forests–and it was not there. I sought for it in her rich mines, her vast world

commerce, her public school system, and in her institutions of higher learning–and it was not

there. I looked for it in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution–and it was

not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with

righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because

America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great!”

~Alexis de Tocqueville.

While at camp, amidst the surrounding beauty,

I thought of this post in order to

display some of the beauty of rural America.

God’s abundant blessing upon America the Beautiful is evident,

“from sea to shining sea.”

In a land so blessed in the natural,

is there a Christian who cannot see a need for

a continuation of God’s great Grace shed upon it

for a spiritual awakening among its many inhabitants?

I for one, long to see a continuation of what Katherine Bates wrote:

America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

2 Chronicles 7:14

If My people, which are called by My Name,

shall humble themselves,

and pray,

and seek My face,

and turn from their wicked ways;

then will I hear from heaven,

and will forgive their sin,

and will heal their land.
